Kentucky legislature tackles animal care

Kentucky is the latest state to join the animal care standards cause. As such, state Senate Bill 105 has been introduced to create a state animal care standards board and commission.
According to the Bowling Green Daily News, state Sen. David Givens (R-Greensburg) says, “The goal of this commission is to define what proper and adequate animal care is. Currently in Kentucky it is illegal to abuse and neglect livestock, but what constitutes abuse and neglect is a very broad definition.
“Most farmers do a very good job,” Givens adds. “But across the country we are starting to see a wave of emotion drive what is considered to be normal and practical animal care. Our goal is to empower the commission with members who have knowledge about animal care standards ... to define what practical is before emotion takes over.”
The measure must now wend its way through the state's legislative process.
